Apple and Batteries

Phone slow, why not just buy a new one?

A little over a year ago I upgraded from an iPhone 5s to a 6s. Apple and the cell provider service had ceased providing discounts, so the purchase of the entire cost of the phone is on the consumer.

Every iteration of the iPhone has been around $1000.00    Let that sink in for a moment.

Now I think that the consumer protection agency should be all over this but what do I know.  Apple in its quest to become even richer did something to the phones through their IOS updates to cripple the 6S.  In doing so everyone that I knew that still had a 6S had similar complaints, the battery did not last at all.

Slowing the speed of the processor down through its IOS update was bad enough, making the phone, unusable criminal.

I had just paid my last 35 dollar payment on the phone when all of this came about.  The timing was a coincidence as others who had their paid for in advance also stopped working acceptably around then as well.

I began the process of looking at the newer products, the seven the 8 and now the 10, all of which came out during the time I have had the 6S…

While I was thinking about buying the ten, it dawned on me that all of the accessories that I had purchased for the 5 and six would also be e-clutter or e-trash.  This is wasteful!  Where do we go with this?

Making an appointment with the “geniuses” They ran diagnostics on my phone and told me that the battery was working fine.  They could not tell me what the speed of the processor was or anything that interested me, but they could say to me that the battery was fine.  I know that it is not but, how do I prove it?

Two weeks later, the phone is on the charger when it rings; the battery is at 100%. A 27-minute phone call the battery is critical in the red.

Once again I am back in the mode of buying a new phone or going back and arguing with the geniuses.

I make another appointment.  When I get there, I insist that they change the battery.  Little did I realize that other places in the area change the battery as well.

The phone, off the charger in the morning and used several times during the day, is still in the 90% range when I return home in the evening.

The more significant issue is, what is the life expectancy of a phone?

In my world of IT, budget planning is paramount.

  • The lifespan of a desktop PC is five
  • The lifespan of a laptop is three years
  • The lifespan of a smartphone is three

With the average cost of a smartphone around $1000.00, one can easily see that this must be factored into your annual budget.

When Apple or pick your vendor arbitrarily cripples a device making it unusable not only does it damage their relationship with their customers but it does severe damage to a business’s who provide such things to their employees.

I always suggest that we allow the employee to get the phone they want, and then we will enable them to expense the monthly cost of the service.  If they want a new phone every time Apple or Samsung develops one, then they can get it on their dime.

The bottom line is the phone should last no less than three years.

If I had a suggestion to make cell phones better I would like to see them made in such a way that I can purchase a replacement battery and change it myself.

As always your thoughts on this or any other topic are welcome.

Feedback #UPS

How many times have you spent an hour doing something that should take two minutes?

Hello my friends, how was your weekend?

Let me start by thanking the many of you who purchased my novels these last few days.  I watch and notice and truly it means a lot when I see them going to places all over the globe.  Thanks so much!

I am one of those who will provide feedback to other authors, a business of different kinds and eating establishments.  Restaurants will get a sunshine letter or complaint letter faster than just about anyone else as what they do can make folks ill.

While we are being nudged as a society into self-service it is incumbent on those companies to have an intuitive kiosk, websites or any other method to complete the transaction period.

UPS has missed the mark in my humble opinion.

Many of you who follow me know that I am a bit of a nerd.  I admit it, relish in it, and would not change a thing.  I spend my days making people’s lives easier by constructing networks, designing systems that are idiot proof, and secure, as well as teaching and providing business continuity plans and of course disaster recovery strategies.

I have been at it since 1982.  Long before Bill Gates was a household name and Steve jobs was still a criminal, I was twiddling bits.  The OS was CPM or Basic and I remember DOS 1.1…

Moving business forward is often a painful exercise.  We don’t want to be on the bleeding edge of anything.  Let the idiots take the risks.  We don’t want to be on the trailing edge either.

I do this by providing the truth in the way of facts and figures.  Businessmen and women do not make decisions on emotions.  If they do, don’t buy their stock as they will not be around long.

So why is UPS in my crosshairs tonight?

What does UPS have to do with nerdy things or technical things?

UPS, (in my opinion) your website sucks! That is an emotional statement, and a well earned one.

I am prepared to back that up with more than a simple disparaging comment.

Now and then I sell a thing or two on eBay.  It is usually a way to let someone else have something that I have had for some time.  Seldom do I make money or turn a profit.  To me, it is more about something that I cherished and now I am done with it, so I let someone else admire it for a bit.

I screwed up when posting these collectibles on eBay and did not pay close enough attention when picking the shipping options and chose UPS instead of USPS.

The first item that sold took me over an hour to get the label to print, and I am not so sure that I did not get charged twice.

The website is not intuitive.  You need to get someone who has not seen your site before and have them walk you through the steps that they need to ship an item and then build the backend around them, the customer.  Do this with more than just a couple of users.

Linking it to eBay was easy enough to figure out but, still not intuitive enough.

Pulling up the customer information and the shipping information took several attempts to get it to work correctly, but…after an hour of stopping and trying again I managed to get a package to ship.

This effort took over an hour of my life, wasted, for an item that sold for $1.00 !

Today I sold another item, and it too was on UPS.  Having set up my account, I was in hopes that this would work differently.  I walked through all the steps in less than ten minutes, told it to print the label and the website spits back an error telling me that there was an error, try again later.  FFS!

Starting back at the beginning several times I ended up at the same place with no option to print a label.  I was advised that there was a tracking number but no option to print a shipping label.

Voiding the transaction seemed the logical thing to do and the only thing it appeared that I could do.

I tried to once again start from the beginning, and once again it told me the same information that there was a tracking number but no option to print a label.
Even though I voided the transaction, it was still not annulled.

I have a friend who works in the mail room.  Rang them up and asked them what they thought of my predicament.

“I hate that fucking web site so much; I use Fed Ex whenever possible!”

I laughed my butt off!  I ended up printing the address of where it will go, and I will now go and stand in the long line at the post office to mail a 3.50 cent sale, rather than waste another moment of my time on crappy websites that don’t work.

No matter the cost, the customer bought it in good faith, and I will get it to them even if I have to deliver it personally.

I will, however, be super careful about which shipping service I use in the future.

How is that for Feedback?

Bill Gates is who he is today because of “the intuitive GUI.” That and he royally screwed the inventor of DOS.

Steve stopped selling blue boxes out of his garage and made his fortune on an “Intuitive GUI” and a different more robust Motorola processor.”  Had he priced his product cheaper, I dare say Bill would have been sucking hind tit.

Now, as a nerd, with over 30 years of experience, if you want to fix it…I charge $125 an hour and let me tell you, my time would be well worth it! I will negotiate if it is a long-term project.

Think Intuitive, and by all means test it with real people.

The Creative Spark

A modern Day solution for the gun-control debate.

Update 5/22/2018

So the Satan worshipper cannot get the death penalty as he is too young and not responsible for his actions.  17, too young to be responsible… Do you all have a full appreciation of this?  Now we have a number of 17-year-olds trying to affect gun legislation but they are not old enough to really know what they are doing…

I just found that odd and thought I would share it.

That is all…

Original post below…

I think outside the box.  That is one reason that my novels are so entertaining.

Since Friday my thoughts have been with the families who lost loved ones.  My thoughts have been with those that are still in Hospital hurting, wondering if they will ever be normal again.

My thoughts are also with those that have endured this PTSD causing event that will never be “OK” again.  Realizing that Ok is a relative term, their lives have been indelibly altered.

The Satan worshiping animal in jail who stupidly gave up his Miranda rights just shows how much of a fool that he really is.   I am sorry for his parents and family.  Their lives too must be absolute hell.  If this person gets the death penalty his parents will most certainly endure more hell and it is certainly not fair to them.  It is my hope that this person understands how much pain he and his actions have caused those around him and of course the rest of the civilized world!

His family is most certainly asking themselves “what if?”

  • What if we did not do this or that?
  • Why did I have those guns?
  • Why were they not in a safe?
  • Why did we have the kid?

What if…..?

As some small amount of solace to his family had he not managed to get your guns he was actively working on making explosives.  Now truthfully, he does not seem that bright so the odds are good he would have blown himself up trying to make a working device but… With all the information out there on the Internet and with the anarchist of the world, just a google search away he might have made something that worked.  A working IED might have taken far more lives than it did.

We need to learn from this.  Our goal should be to figure out what triggered him, what were the warning signs and where did he go off the rails.  Worshipping Satan was probably a good first clue.

The ripple in the “pond” from this event goes far and wide.  Many today and even now are troubled by these latest events.  That creative spark which allows me to create realms with aliens has been subjugated by a more pressing, a more altruistic endeavor.

I have been thinking “What If?”

I have tweeted out an idea for a gun that is BTO or Biometrically Triggered Only.  Maybe we should call it a BTG or Biometrically Triggered Gun or possibly BOG Biometrically operated Gun.

This is no longer in the realm of science fiction, which is what I write.  This is doable.

What if:

Ruger or Smith & Wesson or Springfield thought outside the box?  Can we make a gun that will operate with only fingerprints of the legal owner?

The answer is a resounding yes… “We have the technology, we can build it!”

Do you realize that if we could do this and I am certain that we can, the US could start the process of revolutionizing the world.? Countries like the UK could give their citizens their guns back so they could defend themselves.

Countries like Mexico could give their people their guns back so just possibly the citizens of that country could defend themselves from gangs.  Could you imagine what it would be like if Mexico could defend itself against the cartels and Gangs?  In 2017 26000 people were massacred and our MSM said little to nothing about it.  Instead, we have an invasion on our southern border and we are putting a Band-Aid on a hemorrhage. The Wall is a 20 billion dollar Band-Aid!

Give the people the tools they need to take their country back from the gangs and corruption that most certainly is going on south of our border.

You will never get all the guns off the streets that were not BOG but, What if you stopped making the ammo for them and only made ammo to fit the BOG?
How long would it take to put a huge dent in the non-BOG’s supply of bullets?

I realize that those NRA enthusiasts will scream bloody murder, sorry!

If you have a better idea I am interested but I don’t hear one.  I see one side trying to score political points blaming the Republicans and the NRA.  They don’t give a damn about you or your problems.  They have bodyguards and your issues are not theirs.  They need issues which trigger emotional outburst so they can blame it on the other guy.   I am telling you how politics work here so take it to the bank.

They tell you what is wrong with the world and who is to blame for it.  That is how you win elections.  In order to tell you what is wrong, something must be wrong.  Shootings are a made to order disaster which they never let go to waste.  Politicians suck!  The MSM sucks right along with them as they are their propaganda machines.

We should demand that they all have term limits but that is another argument.

What if we created this technology and then replaced those guns of legal gun owners with BOGs. You have ten guns we give you ten BOGs.  You want an AR style BOG you got it.  When you die, it dies with you.

We have the technology to biometrically allow guns to be functional only in the hands of the legitimate owner.  Apple already has developed the finger print technology so how about we use this technology and marry it to guns.  Your handprint becomes the key to take the safety off.

If I purchase a gun, it is assigned to my handprint.  Only I can make the damned thing work.  When I die, the gun dies.  No resale value, no loopholes, nothing.  They can bury it with me or melt it down as it has no value to anyone but me.

Gun shows could be free of rules as there would be no bullets for them.

To qualify for this BOG, of course, you pass background checks and what have you so the guns cannot any longer be used in the hands of cray cray’s!

Cool idea isn’t it?

What say you down under, would you allow such a program in your country? Would you allow your citizens of good moral character to own such a gun?

How about the UK, never mind asking that mayor in London, ask someone with who gives a shit for the rule of law. This mayor just told the people of London that terrorist attacks are a way of life, get used to it!”  FFS!  Do you want that in this country?  We need the 2cnd Amendment we just need guns out of the hands of mental midgets or animals.

The first gun manufacturer to come out with this will be one rich company.

I have given so many ideas away in the past, some of them to Apple who I am certain some employee said it was theirs. I am a starving artist and author but …if you use this idea and it all works out, how about remembering where it came from?

Do you know, I have sent ideas in the past to GE, Apple, Novell, Cisco, RCA..oh yes and Sony.  In almost every case they told me that they were already working on something like that… Yeah sure. Months to years later there it was.  Well, I got what I needed.

Listen, the world needs a solution and I don’t have a million dollars to spend on attorneys to secure a patent.

While I am certainly bright enough to make a prototype, I don’t have the dollars or time to devote to it.  Time being the main issue as this is needed yesterday!

Can you imagine the applications for the military alone?  The guy gets killed or loses his gun and it is of no use to the bad guy.

Do you know that if you file a patent here in the US is cost 10 to 15 thousand for just the US.  Then it is over $3,000 for every other country in the world.  There are a lot of them.

It is amazing that new technology is ever let loose by the little guy as it is cost prohibitive.

In summary…Invent the damned BOG… Should not take long, not rocket science.

Do away with all current sizes of ammunition which would effectively stop the gun trade and illegal possession of guns.

Look for and arrest anyone trafficking in black market ammo.  This market will go cray cray!  The good news is lead is a lot harder to smuggle then meth.

Create a substitute gun (BOG) for those that are of a good moral character and provide them free of charge.

Would not need a gun buy back as the ammo would become scarce and over time disappear.

You could certainly offer a buyback program however… Cash for clunkers II.  Instead of cars, it is guns.  I bet the liberals would fund it for you rather quickly!

If the gun makers are averse to this idea get me a bloody grant and I will do it!  I will stop my normal routines and create the BOG!  BOG for the Swamp, I like it!

Trust me, I can do this so I know it should not be a stretch for Gun Makers and companies like Apple to work together on a project that would save lots of lives.

If you just hate this idea save your vitriolic email.  I don’t need it, and I can ignore it with the best of them.

If you love it, go invent the damned thing and be rich!

If you have ties to the political swamp creatures who control the purse strings and can convince them that this would solve the issues, get me a grant!

I need enough for lawyers which is just crazy.  I can put together a business plan on request and come up with a non-DC related budget. It would be over a million dollars for the prototype which is nothing for DC.  For Ruger, it might be an issue.  Hell Ruger, you go get the grant!

I would bet that I could have a prototype in less than a year!

Now until I hear from someone, I am going back to outer space, there is a war going on between the Ularins and the Zenites.

All kidding aside this would work.

People would hate it because they would feel threatened but, I am here to tell you it has to be sold properly and for that, you need a good PR firm.

I am not talking about violating the second amendment. I am talking about saving lives and getting illegal guns off the streets.

Gun Violence, the debate continues but need it?

I must admit that every time I hear about a school shooting, it makes my blood boil.  The Church shooting a few months ago changed my life as Church is a large part of mine.   Last evening when I was reading some of the posts on social media I responded somewhat critically as some are apparently not privy to the facts.

Check this out.

Over 26,000 Mexicans were murdered last year by gangs and cartels.  You don’t hear about it on our news because even the most dimwitted among us would figure out it was because they cannot defend themselves.  Their government made guns illegal to reduce gun violence.  Someone forgot to give the memo to the cartels and other miscreants “animals” in that society.

The violence in Mexico and in South American continues on, every year with tens of thousands murdered and our news says nothing about it.  Why?

The Mexican news blames the drug users in America for the problem. If there were no demand for the drugs, the cartels would not have the business ergo, there would be no cartels.  So if you smoke pot, it is your fault according to their news anchors.

That is also their rationale for America to take in the tens of thousands crossing our border yearly.

Some of them crossing the border are to get away from the violence, and some are the animals which Trump spoke of, and again his comments were taken out of context to serve a purpose. The purpose is to create animus and further divide our country.  The citizens of this country if they ever figure out who the enemy really is, I wonder if CNN and others will survive?

The NRA is protecting your right to defend yourself with yes a gun. You don’t have to buy a gun or know how to use one.  Those of us who would rather not be a victim should have that right.  Those of you who rail against the NRA are responsible for their supporters giving them vast amounts of dollars.

The NRA is just an organization which lobbies on behalf of those that sell guns and those that want to own them.  Yes, I see that there is a capitalistic connection but, we are a capitalistic country. That smartphone or tablet that you are using would not have been created if we were not a capitalistic society.

Do I buy the whole militia bit?  No.

If our government wanted to take our guns away, it would be doable.  They would destroy the very fabric of the nation by doing so, but they could do it.  Could you imagine your kids or grandkids wearing the uniform of our military coming for your guns?

The Gun that is the poster child for all of this media hype is really nothing more than a cosmetically altered rifle that if taken to the battlefield would get our boys and girls killed.  It is semi-automatic and small caliber. That is very much unlike the military version which is full auto and large caliber.  It merely looks or appears to be something that it is not.  Is it deadly?  Sure!  Would it be an equal match for any military weapon?  Hell no!

They designed the gun to appeal to the gun enthusiast who thinks that it looks bad ass.  I would never own one.  A good deer rifle is much more accurate.  This would be the same person who would buy a Maserati to go to work in. Much like owning a sports car that will do 150 in a place where you can only drive 60, what is the point? Oh yeah, it looks bad ass!  Is it a comfortable car?  No.  Is it a nice riding car? No! it is a status symbol, and it seems bad ass.  Same mentality.

Our local news here in Dallas reported that the Santa Fe shooter used AR style guns to perpetrate his killing spree. They blatantly and willfully lied to trigger emotional responses from those of us who care about such things and to further their anti-gun agenda. This was well after Greg Abbot told the world in his news conference what the weapons were.

They may or may not retract the article but tens of thousands read it, and few will ever see the retraction or put two and two together.  That is yellow journalism and irresponsible.

The Animal used a shotgun and a .38 revolver.  He was somewhat efficient using them.

The debate will live on partially spurred by facts and partly by fiction created by those with an agenda.

If you are a student of history, you know that every time citizens were disarmed by their government terrible things happened.  If you were not aware of that,, I would encourage you to visit your local library and read a few books.  ,

Today if you are the victim of a home invasion, and you do not have the means to defend yourself or your family; when the police finally arrive it will be to write up the report, put that yellow tape around the property and see that the bodies make it to the coroner.

Sorry for the run on sentence. Those are the facts.

If you are a lady and some animal wants to rape you the advice given by lawmakers running in 2016 was to piss yourself.  No self-respecting rapist would want you if you had pee on you.. This is a true statement, and it is bullshit!

How about you pull out your nine millimeter Kimber and start pulling the trigger until it just clicks?

Animals like that are rabid and disserve to carry your bullets in a watermelon-sized pattern in the center of their chest.

No woman should suffer rape, and no woman should be told to piss themselves as the first line of defense!  Yes, that was uncle Joe who proffered that advise.

In London as we speak, or as I type, they were told by their mayor that terrorist attacks are a way of life and they should just get used to them.  “No, they don’t have guns either. Well, not the citizens.”

Now they have released what to do if you are the victim of a knife attack or acid attack.  If you can, you are to run and hide and cower until the threat has passed.  If you are stabbed, you are to put pressure on the wound and call police when the danger has passed. If you are splashed with acid, you are to wash the acid off when you can find a place to do that, and then call police when you are no longer in danger.

Can you imagine being told by your government that this is a way of life, get used to it?

Think about that.  The president of this country tells you something like that, I would go bonkers!

If there were no NRA, how long would it be before some president issued that edict here in the good old USA?

I am for responsible gun ownership, and I always will be.

What does that look like?

A person of sound mind and body is the number one priority.

Guns in the home must be made inaccessible to those that did not purchase them legally.

The person who does own them should go to the range a few times a year and re-familiarize themselves with the weapon and its reliability to accurately hit the target and that the mechanism is in good working order.

Most guns today are sold with a trigger lock.  If you don’t have a gun safe you can at the very least utilize the trigger lock when the gun is not in use.

Personally speaking, if you cannot afford a gun safe, you should not own a gun.  That is my opinion.

I am for marrying technology and gun ownership.  Why not invent or design guns using the biometric fingerprint technology that Apple already has?  You pick up the gun, and it quickly maps your handprint and arms itself.

Someone steals the gun from you, it is useless.

You die, hopefully, of natural causes, the gun dies with you.

The government can provide the gun, and there would be no resale value as it would only work for the owner.

Folks we have this technology why not “make it so!”

I realize that this is a form of gun control and I as a second amendment supporter would advocate for it.

When my employees would come into my office and begin to whine about some issue, I would allow them to finish and then ask them. “What should we do about it?” If they did not have any idea I would send them away until they had one.

One should never just bitch without at least making an effort to devise a solution to the problem.  At least at that point, you can start a dialogue.  Knee-jerk reactions are almost never a good idea.

Apple intentionally slowed iPhones through IOS updates

iPhone slowed by Apple

I must admit that I often think that a simple flip cell phone was not a bad thing.  While the smartphone is the Swiss Army Knife of gadgets, it is also an expensive gadget.

I jumped on the Apple bandwagon when Smartphones were relatively young.  Steve Jobs, who I met years ago while supporting Next Step computers is seen holding a phone, and I had to have it.  Well, that phone was replaced by another and still yet another then the 5S then the 6S, and I stopped there as the difference between the 6 and 7 I could not justify for $1000.

I noticed that my 5s was getting slow and I knew it had something to do with the IOS updates but I had no way of proving it.  Obtaining the 6S, the speed was back, and the fluid nature of the phone was exceptional until recently.  One IOS update after another and the phone slows to a crawl or locks up or sucks the life out of the battery.  The Phone is often warm when “nothing” should be going on, but something is going on, but what?

Today we learn that Apple does slow the processor down in “older phones” to preserve the battery life.  Folks that is just wrong on so many levels of wrong!  Tell me I need a new battery and I will get it replaced.  Don’t make me purchase another $1000 toy when this one is still perfectly fine.

Oh wait, it is not entirely okay because now it is slow and acting wonky!

I kept my old phones and did not update the IOS.  The Apps that are on them are the apps that worked with that IOS, and they still function and they perform adequately.  My 4S is now faster than my 6S.

We could go into this whole tin foil hat category of not knowing what the damn phone is doing.  Is it listening to my every word?  Does the camera come up and peep around the room to see what it can see?

I don’t take my phone into the bedroom for more than tin foil hat reasons.  The thing often makes noises at times that I don’t want it to do.  I do have an iPad in the bedroom which is silenced in every way possible.  Is it listening?

We learned a few years ago that smart TV’s were listening to us.  We know that Alexa is listening but to what and for what?  Is it only commands or something more nefarious.  Wifi enabled dolls were listening for “keywords,” but in reality, they were spying!

I use the Hey Siri command, but I must confess that unless Apple undoes the deliberate slowdown of my devices, Microsoft and Android may get my future business.

I had an IPad generation one that still worked fine.  An older family member wanted a tablet to use as a Kindle device.  Resetting my iPad to factory settings I quickly learned that Apple does not keep the latest IOS for that model period.  They not only don’t hold the IOS for it but, none of the apps that are available today will function with it.  In short, I bricked a $1000 iPad while trying to do a good deed.

Now I have a second gen and an iPad air and the pro version.  Each of those was $1000 each, and I guess that they will gradually become paperweights as well.  Is this right?  Batteries are a trick to replace them, but it is doable.  I did it in a Nexus and an older iPhone.  I guess that these places that do it professionally can do it quickly as well.

Apple needs to stop slowing down the older equipment.

Apple needs to make available the latest IOS for older devices that worked with it and also provide access to the apps that worked with that IOS.  This could easily be an automatic thing when you try to update a device.  Here is the last IOS for this device and when you look for apps, it looks at the machine and IOS and sends you to that site to obtain older versions of the apps.

Customers need a bill of rights when it comes to computers or computing devices and this includes Microsoft as well.

A perfect example of this was and is XP.  That was a working evolution of the software as was office 95.  All of that was expensive, and as long as you have a computer that worked with it, I don’t think it is too much to ask that it not be crippled by companies wanting to sell you something more.

I gave a computer configured like this to a person who does not use it on the Internet.  No updates 1.5GHZ Dell and guess what.  They still play the games, use office 95 print, and everything is just great even to this day.  They never put it on the internet, so it is static and just works.

My accounting system was in an XP box, and it worked perfectly until  Quickbooks started crippling the software demanding that I update to the latest stuff.  Customers need a bill of rights!

I need to research their competition to see if they slow down their older equipment too.  While some of this is due to developers building packages on the latest greatest computers, some of this is designed obsolescence purposeful to generate a desire or need for yet another iteration of a device that is on a time clock ticking away until another more powerful device is created and marketed.

I usually extoll the virtues of my books and ask you to support me follow me and so forth but today I thought getting this out there was prudent.

Thanks for the follows, retweets and of course comments and feedback!
