The following is an excerpt from Diamond Joe.

Here is a sample from my book.

Donna is a professor at the college.  After losing her husband, she had shut down emotionally. Fate played a hand as she happened to own a racehorse and was not getting it trained.  When one of her student’s friends, happened to be a trainer comes to assist her, things change.

I won’t spoil the book for your but below are a few paragraphs out of the chapter “Society.”

Donna and Sam fell in love and she married her.  She did it in a very public way which caused all sorts of issues for some stuffed shirts.  Below is from the book…

Some of the staff got together over dinner one night, and Blake was in attendance as well. Donna was enjoying the camaraderie while visiting with her peers.  Blake was tying one on.

Coming up to Donna the booze had its effects on him.  “Can I ask you something?”

“Sure Blake, what is on your mind?”

“You caused me a lot of grief a few months ago.”  He lamented.  Donna saw that he was feeling his drinks. “I am sorry about that Blake, what is your question?”

“No, it is ok, Sally straightened me up.  She even told me to pull my head out of my ass!”

Donna laughed at that as she thought Blake often suffered from Rectal-Cranial Inversion or RCI.

“So you were not upset by my wedding to Sam?”

“I was at first; I had people wanting to pull their support from the school and all kinds of foul calls, it was awful.  Sally pointed out that I was acting like a caveman and I needed to get with the times.”

“Blake, I had no idea that I would love another woman, but I do, what is your question.”

“Why the paper, why the public wedding.  Why not just do your thing in quiet and live your life.  You live so far out there that nobody would ever have known!”

The rest of the staff was listening ready to bite his head off.  Donna looked at them giving them the backoff look which they all knew well.

“Blake, I am going to tell you this, which I hope you will remember because I will not repeat this to you again.  I originally wanted to do just that. I told Dane and Marcie that nobody must know about this.”

“So what happened?  Why?”

“The teary-eyed love of my life looked at me and asked, we can tell people eventually can’t we?”

“Blake, that broke my fucking heart!  When I realized that I had just marginalized the love of my life to some god damned secret, it killed me! I will not apologize for loving another human being, not to you, the board of directors or the fucking president of the college! Anyone who thinks our marriage is any less than theirs is full of shit and fuck them! I have no tolerance for bigots.  When you realize that we are all human, barring a few minor differences in plumbing, we are basically the same; it makes a whole new argument out of it.  The inconvenience I caused you and some at the school is trivial in comparison to how badly I hurt that person who is so special to me! I hurt her by wanting to protect the fucking school over her.  Family comes first Blake!”

“I am sorry Donna, I had no idea.”

“I had to bribe the damned preacher to meet us at the hotel and marry us!  He would not do it at his church, and I had to agree to keep his name private.  Do you know how that feels?”

“Why not just go to the courthouse and do what the others….”

“Do you see what you just did?  “

“I see the problem; you feel cheated.”

“Blake I had the white dress, the flowers the parties and all that stuff with Steve.  Samantha got none of that!  She got screwed by the system, by bigots and ignorant assholes. The whole time that preacher was doing his thing I hated him in my heart!  He took money to do that which is against his fucking idea of morality.  Did you know that morality has a price?”

The people at the table were shocked.  They had no idea what it took to get married like most people. “I wish there were something I could do to make any of that right,” Blake said.

Yes, people, the book is that good and even better.  Most of my novels are that good if I do say so myself.  But…Since Saga of the Starduster is my number one seller maybe people like science fiction better than stories that are germane for today.

You can read part of it for free on Amazon but…I really would like you to read it and support independent authors such as myself.  I am loathed to waste my time trying to use the right magic words attracting an agent, so I need you guys to assist me.

With 25 novels out there, I just need one of them to go viral.

Diamond Joe Rev 2

I think it would force me to be a better writer.

Feedback is a wonderful thing.

When I write my creative juices are often flowing in the wee hours.  Unless my head is on the keyboard and a long line of xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx’s are crossing the screen, I am writing.

When the flow of the story falters or stops, so do I.

Having said that, some of my booboo’s show up and I don’t see them.

Someone pointed out that Marcie became Darcy in one paragraph.

Darcy is one of the main characters in my hole in time series and Marcie a supporting character in Diamond Joe.

Another pointed out that Diamond Joe was a grandfather and then a father… All good calls!

I usually do not try and edit when I am sleepy and those are words that all authors should probably live by.

Revision 2 is on Amazon and will be released as soon as they review it to make sure I haven’t done something nefarious.

Time is part of the story and often we don’t get it all perfect.  The story flows thusly and we must give the reader some sense of how much time is actually going by.  There are so many parts to making a good book, time, weather, the mood should all be there without even thinking about it.

Set the stage as it were.

That is why I am thinking about writing a screenplay.

Not only do you have to come up with the dialogue but every bloody detail must be there.  Whether anything happens with it or not, is superfluous to the reason for the writing of it.

I think it would force me to be a better writer.

Thoughts?

Go check out Diamond Joe or any of my 20 odd other novels out there.  Tell your friends about me, follow me and I will follow back!

If you are writing and chances are that you are if you are reading this blog, how is it going for you?

Divided We Stand!

Romance novels are never out of style!

Journalism in the US is in Crisis.  To get ratings, or hits on news sites, just about anything will pass for journalism. Opinions are passed off as fact, and many don’t bother to check the sources to see what it is that they are reading or listening to.

If I am engaged in a logical debate with anyone on any topic, it will hopefully provide a healthy discussion.  Debates are critical in communicating one’s opinion on just about any subject.

As a young person, I was warned to never discuss three topics.  While the issues are telling and date me, they were:

  • Women’s Lib
  • Politics
  • Religion

Never mind those issues themselves, as those are not the focal point of this blog.  The topics themselves are fraught with what?

“opinion and emotions.”

When one tries to debate an opinion it is the proverbial Kobayashi Maru  (Star Trek term)  They are a no win debate.  Much like trying to nail jello to a wall, you will get nowhere.

Television commercials of the day were rife with Virginia Slims Cigarette ads with the theme. “You’ve come a long way baby!”  While inhaling carcinogens was supposed to somehow make you feel good about yourself, the idea was, that women were liberated and they could smoke in public. Why not smoke a cigarette made especially for women.

All of these topics were so rife with emotions that it would be just about impossible to sit down and have a civil conversation without animus of some sort, rearing its ugly head.

If someone today stands behind a megaphone and has an opinion about some topic that you don’t agree with, animus comes out. What is worse, we have a 24 hour 7 day a week news cycle that perpetuates its own narrative.  Once again not fact checking, using anonymous sources they push out a story.  Social media is complicit in that these narratives are pushed out on Twitter or Facebook without checking the facts.

By the way, if you need a megaphone, you have already lost.

Celebrities who push out their emotionally driven rants fuel the fires and people listen because they see them on the screen, and feel they know them.

You don’t know them!

While intellectual debates prompt discussion, emotional debates prompt action.  We have seen it over the last few years in the US, and around the world.

Those that stir the pot must take some accountability for their narrative.  Much like yelling fire in an auditorium what you say, should have consequences.

My argument is this.  Michelle Carter was just found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for tweets to her x boyfriend suggesting that he kill himself.

“Gees TW that is a far stretch, she told him to commit suicide!”

Kathy Griffin held up a bloody facsimile of President Trump’s head.  Many unhinged people around the world saw that, making it that much tougher for the secret service and the president and his family.

Shakespear in the park in New York portrays President Trump being viciously attacked and killed by his own staff.

The shooter who shot at Republican Senators had a social media account full of anti-trump rhetoric including many pieces by CNN.  Rachel Maddow who is not a   Trump supporter was prominent on his page.

This type of emotionally charged activity can prompt the emotionally challenged to act out badly.

If I were Michelle Carters’ Attorney I would seek another trial and point out that what she did is no worse than the emotionally charged false attacks on a sitting president.

The real argument in this case is. “Are we required by law to report someone who may be a danger to him or herself?” The argument today is no; unless you are a health care professional.

I only loosely followed the case.

  • Did she know that he was serious?
  • Was she sarcastic in her text like “leave me alone you freak!”
  • I am confident that they dug into this, but it is an interesting case.
  • Yes, a man is dead, but it was by his own hand.
  • How many couples torture their mate in psychological ways unknowingly, right now?
  • If attorneys could get OJ off, certainly a good lawyer could get her off as well.
  • I think she was a teen at the time as well, an emotional teen and not very smart! Is that cause for twenty years behind bars? I don’t think so.

My point is, what we say matters.  Those with the larger megaphones IE journalist should be held to higher standards!  The trolls on Twitter spewing hate through some pseudonym should not be listened to. Many are in fact robots spewing out hate word salad.  Those that own those robots should be held accountable.

Wednesday, Tucker Carlson was admitted to the hospital for an emergency appendectomy.  The “loving Left” was promptly tweeting vile things about this lightening rod on Fox News.  The left used to be the loving left, what the hell happened?

Whether you agree with him or not, wishing bad things to happen to him, is over the top and not far afield from what Michelle Carter was just convicted of.  Stop and think, would you?

Some have accused me of being far right… Sorry to disillusion you but I am in the middle.  Never voted straight ticket, never will.  I vote for the person’s character or in some cases the lesser of two evils.  I do vote, and my opinions are well founded on research beyond the television and what someone on some news channel tells me.  If it sounds too far out there, it probably is.

On a different topic, Diamond Joe has been on Amazon a week and is selling nicely.  To those of you that have read my book sending me helpful feedback, thanks so much!  I really like that story, and I hope that it will sell well around the world.

Romance novels are never out of style!

I started another book about witches, warlocks, dragons, and pirates!  I like the way that it is going and yes, I am making these tropes unique. Uniquely TW that is.

Love to hear your thoughts.  Please keep it civil, and we can talk about it.

If not, please don’t waste your time or mine. Have a Super Weekend!

Below is the backstory to Diamond Joe

Dealing with modern day issues in a conversational way you will no doubt love these characters as much as I do.

Breaking News!

I published Diamond Joe on Amazon tonight 6/5/2017  It will take Amazon a little while to proof it but there you go!  Get it and enjoy it!  This is one of my best yet!

A cold wind from the north was one more reminder that things are not going well for the investors on Wall Street.  Diamond Joe, taking his craft seriously enough survives the crash of the 1920’s, but many of his investors did not.  Some of them indeed ended their lives by jumping from a window or drinking in their car, parked on a railroad crossing.

Diamond Joe, a portly man, was still jovial enough and managed to calm most of his Investors with his quick wit and knowledge of the markets.

Joe’s wife Vera was not doing well with the winters in New York. When her health became a major concern, Joe changed their lives.

The carnage from the collapse reached far and wide leaving many bargains for those who managed to hold onto cash.  Diamond Joe was nobody’s fool and had indeed amassed a small fortune while working for his clients.

Purchasing a plantation that still had tobacco in the fields in South Carolina, he moved his wife to warmer climates.  Over a thousand acres and a large house with some of the land butting up to the Atlantic Ocean.  Diamond Joe was ready for a new adventure.

His kind demeanor and strange luck at cards often found him at events where his pockets were full of others cash on his way home.

Gambling was illegal in most of the states at this time.  Bingo under the guise of charity was still a big thing which is the only way one would find him inside a church.

Horse racing was a legitimate sport up till the late 30’s.  Diamond Joe quickly became an expert at such things, buying Arabians and hiring the best to train and ride them. His luck knew no bounds.

Years pass.  The plantation stays in the family.  Diamond Joe dies in his sleep leaving behind his wife and daughter, Donna.  “Dr. D. Joyce” inherits the estate after the death of Vera, her mother.  Leaving it unattended for a few years, Donna loses her husband to cancer.  With the memories of him too intense in their home in the city, she sells it moving herself out of the city, and back to the plantation that she loved as a child.

35 miles from the nearest town, and miles to her nearest neighbor, Donna was pleased with her choice and enjoyed her solitude.

Steve, her husband’s racehorse named after Diamond Joe went untrained. Donna realized this as the wasting of an investment and decides that something must be done with the horse.

This novel was such an incredible story to tell.  With a love of horses and people, the story wrote itself!  As Donna finds love in a place she dared not even think to look; the tale will warm your heart.

I wanted an agent to pick this story up and run with it.  Query letters just suck, and anyone that has ever written one knows it. If you are an agent, and interested, contact me.

Dealing with modern day issues in a conversational way you will no doubt love these characters as much as I do.

Each story that I write, the characters seem warmer and more lifelike.  I very much like and take a narrative approach to writing as I think that the characters should tell the story! I want you to hear their voice.  When you read my books, you will feel that you are in each of their heads, know what they are thinking, and no doubt you will feel their passion.

I try hard to faithfully tell each of their stories as I hear or see them.  There are times I swear that I am merely taking dictation as the story unfolds.  Often I have no clue where the story will go, or how it will end.

Possibly I spend too much time alone with my thoughts, but the results are often so beautiful that I don’t really care.

The feedback from those of you who have read my work is marvelous, and it keeps me going.

If I cannot find an agent to pick this story up, I will publish it on Amazon.  Over 70% of my sales come from Amazon, and frankly, they are one of the simplest places to e-publish.

I have many things on Smashwords, but truthfully, they are one of the most difficult places to e-publish.  Your mileage may vary.

I am not only the creator of the verbal art.  You know, those pictures that are created within your head but also, the creator of the cover art.

Look at the cover and tell me if you like it.  What does it say to you?  Should I do something different with it?

When this story is released, and you get to read it for yourself, your emotions will be tweaked.  You will laugh, hunger for their success and cry for them as they pull things together to finish as only TW does, on a high note!   Sad things can happen in the story but I won’t have sad endings!
