Is space the final frontier?

The answers are for the people who think outside the box!

As a science fiction writer, I often wonder what space travel would look like for “normal” folks.

If you have ever been stuck at your house because of inclement weather for a few days what happens?  Cabin Fever. Not too many years ago we had snow here in Dallas that kept us all indoors for several days.  We don’t have chains here in the south, and we don’t have snow shovels or snow machines.

A snow storm here in Texas is usually a pleasant diversion from the ordinary.  Schools close at the first flurry, and people rush out to the stores to buy up supplies like they were going to be stuck for weeks on end. No, usually just a few hours to a few days tops.

Realizing that cabin fever is a reality for a few days, I have yet to travel to Australia, not because of money or lack of invitations but the sheer terror of being stuck on a plane for 20 hours! The only way I made it to Hawaii was to layover a few days in Vegas, catch Hawaiian air from there to Hawaii making that leg only six hours.  Did the same on the return trip where I visited the spa at the Hard Rock and fell asleep during the massage.

That was somewhat troublesome when you think about it, naked and asleep while some person is kneading your body and you have no idea if you enjoyed it or not! Or did they enjoy it….? No, let’s not go there….

So let’s take it to the next step.

How long does it take to get to Mars?

For argument’s sake let’s say a year.

A year without going to the mall.

A year without Facebook or any of the other trappings of life that you are used to.

A year of drinking processed urin… Yuck!

A year just to get to your destination and then what?

Why go to Mars, other than it is there?

It is not like you are going to go outside and catch some rays…

What if you get a toothache?

What if some other medical abnormality afflicts you?

Yes, they medically assess your body and rank you as far as your probability of having issues.

How many times have you heard of someone getting checked out by their cardiologist telling them that they are fine? Once they get checked out, they walk out the door and suffer a myocardial infarction?

Imagine you are so far from earth that messages take up to 15 minutes just to go one way?

That would make surfing the web really slow.

That would also eliminate the possibility of some surgeon on earth using something like the Da Vinci machine to remotely do surgery on you. Ruptured appendix, some accident you name it you must depend on a crewmate to do whatever it takes.  What if you are the doctor and you need the emergency procedure?

So, you get to Mars, and you have managed not to see REDRUM on some wall.

Wisely NASA has kept all the axes off the ship.

Why go to Mars?

It is a cold dead planet that has been sterilized by the lack of atmosphere and radiation. No matter what mineral you found the cost of getting it from Mars to the Earth would be prohibitive.

Mars is not the final frontier.  Getting to Mars and setting us some sort of colony would only be beneficial for what we would learn from it.

When situations arose, and we came up with workarounds to fix them as we have done in space travel before.  Yes, we went to the moon, another cold dead rock in space.

As a science fiction writer, I have time travel as a component of space travel.

The physics we have today that we think we understand are not complete.  Imagine taking the formula 2.1+2 and coming up with 4, not 4.1.

We are close, but we don’t have the point one or the point 000001.  There is a margin of error which is enormous.

We don’t understand time.  We think of it as linear, and it is not.

When you think outside the box, you realized that time is consistent with the zone that you are in.

Gravity warps space thus space-time.  The time around the sun is different than the time around the earth.  The time in this solar system is different than the time outside the solar system.  Outside the heliopause time is different.

NASA has a conundrum on their hands in that the Voyager spacecraft are decelerating. They are slowing down.

“How can that be?”

There are many theories.  The one they have settled on is based on a byproduct of the power supply on the craft.  They assume that the tiny (infinitesimal) amount of heat produced by the reaction of the power supply is acting like an ion engine pushing against the fabric of space.

OK, nice try but could it be that space-time where the craft is, may not be the same as it is here?

The space-time around a black hole is much different than it is here so it only makes sense that the further away from sources of gravity “warped space” that time would act differently.

Now if true, that means that the distance between galaxies and stars is different as we perceive it to be!

What if the constant speed of light is not constant at all but fluid depending on the medium through which it travels?

Time is the next frontier.  We need to understand the physics of gravity and time.

We mark time with our watch or a calendar which is punctuated by events, a series of linear events.  I would posit to you that time is not linear at all.  Dilation of time is provable, we need to take it to the next step.

If we assume that the recent reports of alien craft visiting this earth are accurate, and I am willing to believe that they are, then we must deal with the how and they why!

The craft over O hare shot up at an astounding rate, faster than a bullet.

The craft captured on the air force pilots camera took off at a similar rate.

If we stick to our stodgy understanding of physics, we just deny that it happened.  “That is not possible as the inhabitants would be flattened against the inside of the ship… F=M.A don’t you know…? What you say happened does not fit our model of physics, therefore, it did not happen…!  “But it did!”

In my latest novel and in Under Roswell I posit that time can be modulated or manipulated.  If our alien friends switched their craft to a different time constant for them, they would just be floating along having a beautiful day.  To us, they would shoot off like a bullet.  That is what we saw so ergo we must assume that they have figured it out.

Why can’t we figure it out?

The first part of the problem is we have to think outside the box!

If you like my reasoning, please take the time to read either of my books Under Roswell, Saga of the Starduster or Ghost Signals from Colorado Springs.

The ideas are mine, they are not borrowed from anyone.

The concepts belong to me and nobody else.

Ghost Signal from Colorado Springs

My latest release! Ink is still wet!

Number 26 is published on both Amazon and Smashwords!!!!

After three months of toiling away over a hot keyboard, I put the finishing touches on it last night about 2 am!

Folks this is amazing!  I love how this book unfolded and how it turned out! “So will you.”

I believe that there is a niche market where science fiction and romance conjoin to make a good story.

I love romance stories, and l love Science Fiction.  It seems only natural to write a story that has both elements in it.

Unlike Saga of the Starduster, this one is YA.  Yes, there is implied sex but, nothing explicit. I think a young adult can handle that.

So let me tell you a little about this novel.

In a galaxy far far away …” too much?” There is a planet that is orbiting a binary star.  This binary sun is getting closer and closer to the other sun which they fear will Nova taking out the solar system.

What they do not realize is that Nova is not what they need to fear, if the two become one it turns into a magnatar which is deadly for the entire area. Not just that one solar system.

Anyway, they send out ships to find a new place to live.

There is a catch… A race of advanced beings with the weaponry to back it up have dubbed themselves the universal police.  They have laws which forbid contact with worlds that are pre-space.  Yea, I know that trope has been used before, but it is a good one.

The first race, the Bindane find the Earth.  Landing they find cave dwellers.  These creatures look little like what we do today.  Smaller brains, much hair, no verbal communication and oh yes, they will eat one another if they are hungry.

The Bindane are in a quandary, do we stay here and work with them, or keep looking…

They had been in space for many years.  Some of the Bindane leave without permission and have at it with the locals.  Flying around in their smaller ships, they explore much of the world and conquer it.  Having sex with who they choose soon human Bindane hybrids are running around.

Humans with an IQ of 60 and Bindane with an IQ of 250, you can quickly see what is going to happen.  The hybrids all of the sudden can solve puzzles, invent tools and find more efficient ways to kill.  This is why the Xylars, (other race) forbid this kind of activity.

Intelligence without wisdom and empathy make for smart evil people. Unless love is the foundation for who or what you are, the rest is meaningless.

Without giving away the story, it is an inexpensive read! $2.99 from either Smashwords or Amazon!

This book is well worth your time and I encourage you to check it out and please give me feedback.

I was going to write about Grammarly but I think writing about my newest release is a better use of my time.  I have some new tricks with Grammarly I am going to share with you in the days to come.  Is that a tease or what?

Yes, I want you to come back and I want you to tell your friends or family or even your mother In law!

You might like your mother in law… LOL

I will love your mother in law for some feedback… 🙂

We writers cannot rest on our laurels, however.  I already have an idea for #27 and I have an idea for a screenplay.  Which should I do first?

Hello fellow travelers!

With rigged elections, one has to wonder just how sacrosanct our elections truly are.

How are you doing?  Have you had a good week?  Or are you like me, troubled by the events in New York and other places?  I think my faith in our government is a little shaken.  How about you?

I mention traveler because that is what we are all doing, we are traveling.  Yes, we go day to day at our jobs or our lives, but we are still traveling.

A lot of people don’t get it.  You see they think life is about the destination.  Even a lot of the Christians think about the destination of heaven or hell.

Life is not about the destination.

Life is a series of adventures.  When one ends, another begins.  They may be short adventures or long extended adventures, but they are adventures.

So what is life about?

Life is about the journey.

Life is about how you manage your day to day lives making the best out of what you have.

Some foolishly believe that the very rich have it made.  Indeed their goal is to be the very rich!

Money is a tool.  Much like a hammer or a saw, it is a tool.  Some of us are very good at keeping up with our tools and managing them well.  Some are not.  I just want enough as not to have to worry about continually doing something to obtain it.

The more money that you have, the more people will find a way to get it from you.  If you were to win the lottery let’s say, do you have any idea how many “friends” you would suddenly have?

Every charity of the world would play to your emotions trying to extract some part of your windfall.

Your family would also be at your door.

No, I do not play the lottery.  Firstly, I understand math and statistics.

The lottery is a “stupid tax.” Let me say that another way, the lottery is designed to take money away from people who don’t understand math or statistics.

Casinos are also for the folks who don’t understand math.

All games of chance are geared for the house to win. All of those one-armed bandits are wired together to a network of computers.  Some programmer writes the algorithms that tell the many machines out there what they can pay out on any given time.

They must have some payouts, or people would not go.  They don’t pay for those fancy casinos with their own money…  In short, its rigged.

You’re best chances or odds if you will are on games that are not electronic.  Poker, Keno, Roulette to name a few.  The odds are still against you but, not as bad as the one-armed bandits.

I talk about the game of chance and poker and our government because of the revelations of this week.  Bernie was cheated.   To be absolutely fair, Bernie was wheeling and dealing toward to end of the primary.  He was lobbying the DNC for his own jet, and a house on the beach so he would not contest the results and withdraw and of course support Hillary.

With rigged elections, one has to wonder just how sacrosanct our elections truly are.

There are governments in the world today who rig elections to stay in power, are we doing that?

The Clinton machine cheated millions of Americans who voted for Bernie.  The mainstream media is downplaying it or not giving it any airtime.  Liberal talking heads are spinning this behavior as usual!

Donna Brazil who is the whistleblower is the same person who before the debate gave Hillary the questions that she would be asked during the debate.  Who are these people that we elected?

Why is she telling all now?  She wrote a book and is marketing it.  She was part of the machine and is now trying to get rich.

I try not to focus on this too much as there is little that I can do about it.  I think that the media should be reporting the news and not be making up the news.  I believe that Yellow Journalism is alive and well in this country.

  • If you supported Bernie Sanders your vote was stolen.
  • If you supported Martin O’Malley your vote was stolen.
  • This is banana republic kind of stuff, and it happened here!
  • Do you have feelings or thoughts about this?

How do we stop it from happening again?  That is the real question.  Was there an oversight process and if so, how did it fail?

I should be working on my novel, and I am writing a blog.  Have you ever tried to get your head back into your story and away from life?

Currently, my story is traveling at faster than light speed away from the earth!  Some crazy computer has just abducted my characters!

If you like what you read, please follow me and share with your friends and family and whoever else you think might be interested.

“How do you manage to produce so many books while working a full-time job?”

Learn how to find more time to write.

Paraphrased, this is probably the question that I get asked the most.

Action plan

To know what direction you are headed you need what?  You need a goal. If I, for instance, wanted to drive to Chicago from Dallas how would that work?

When I was a lot younger and had no deadlines pressing me, I might throw some clothes in a couple of bags, hire someone to watch the house, get into the car and point it north.

I love road trips without real purpose. However, we have stated that we have an end goal of arriving in Chicago.

Heading north as stated earlier would not get me to Chicago but North Dakota or Minnesota if not Canada. Again all great destinations but, missing our goal entirely.

Firstly we must map out our route which even with the technology we have today, there are several possibilities.

There was a time in my life when driving for twelve or thirteen hours straight was no big deal.  Now, not so much.  I would at least stop halfway.  Planning my trip today would include points of interests along the way, and I would indeed drive out of my way to see or visit something along the way.  These types of activities often provide fodder for manuscripts.

Let’s face it, if time were a real issue, I would hop on board a plane and be there within hours.

My action plan would include proper clothing for the season, as well as places to stop along the way.

The action plan would indeed include something known as “Time management.”

Writing a term paper or a novel is not much different.  With time being the common denominator that we all share, it is also the one thing that we must all guard against wasting.

What do you do with your time?

If you are uncertain about the validity of what I am saying; for a week log every minute of your day.  Don’t cheat.  Much like writing what you eat to assist you in a diet, try keeping up with what you did during the day.  Time management is crucial, and you must be good at it to be successful in life.

I think that sitting in front of the TV being conditioned continuously by whatever you are putting into your head is possibly one of the worst ways of wasting your precious time on this earth.  I truly think that it also dulls your senses and might rob you of who you truly are by supplanting what you know for ideas which are just bullshit.  Someone’s ideas that are put forth in a way to convince you that your long-held beliefs are false.

That is my opinion, and possibly you have a differing one.  We all know people who live through the TV.  Cancelling the cable might be not only a good money saver but, you might find you now have time to do other things.

Not only do we have TV and Netflix but, we have the computer or internet, and of course we have our tablets or phones to steal our time.  We spend so much time communicating nonsense with countless others, that we don’t communicate with those that we are the closest to.

How do you manage to write so much and work a daytime job?

What little I see of TV in passing makes me shake my head. Hundreds of cable channels to fill and they come up with some of the lamest stuff ever.  I am waiting for one of the channels to be of grass growing or paint drying.

Our Culture is changing and in many ways, I don’t think for the better.  Morality has taken a hit as our role models now often spend time behind bars for beating their wives or some other criminal offense.

I could go on and write a complete book about narcissist and sycophants but that is outside the scope of this blog post.  If you want a role model, my friends, look into the mirror and become that which you seek!

Years ago I was on a cruise to Alaska and we parked by one of the glaciers watching it melt.  Yes, if it were not just a glorious day to be outside on the balcony watching ice melt, I would have been pissed.  Finally a large chunk of ice “calved” and that was the highlight of the afternoon.  The massive ship rocked as the ripple from the tons of ice falling into the abyss reached out to us.  Feeling the effect of the displacement of so much water, made the time spent stationary that afternoon, and subsequent sunburn, more tolerable.

Don’t misunderstand me, you must do things in life, especially if you are a writer.  You must travel.  You must speak with people of all walks of life.  I make it a point to learn people’s names and something about them wherever I go.  People are what make life worth it to me.  You are interesting.  Sitting in front of the TV like so many do, getting spoon fed someone’s idea of what is morally acceptable changes the entire audience over time.

The Stepford wives come to mind as so many people around the globe watch things produced in Hollywood.  Our values or Hollywood’s values reach far and wide.

In Saga of the Starduster, I have my aliens tune into our TV to see what they are about to deal with.  Finding Sharknado on the screen, their first impressions are that the sharks are the apex life forms, and humans are their prey.   Not too far from reality except these sharks travel by manipulating vortices and attack bipedal creatures who have chainsaws mounted on their appendages.

When the Ularins tune across a football game, my aliens think that this is some sort of war and the football must be explosive.

If Aliens were listening to our radio and watching our Hollywood version of life, what would they think?

“How do I manage to write so much?”

I try not to waste time, and I scheduled several hours a day to either write or market my books.  Having said that I also look for opportunities to go out into the world and be part of it.  Watching it through the eyes of some Hollywood producer is not the way I care to figure out who we are as a people and why we are the way that we are.

Time management is key to life in general, not just creating your first or twenty-first novel.  Make time for what you are passionate about.  If that is writing, don’t let a good idea get lost in the shuffle of the noise in our lives.

You Mom’s and want to be authors, don’t allow your dreams to get cast aside.  God invented Bed Times so parents can still live a life. Enforce them while killing the internet and other things that might keep the urchins up and in your face.  We had quite times an hour before bedtime which meant they could read.  Lights out was strictly enforced. Not only so they got enough sleep, but so we could still have some modicum of life.  Phones are taken away at dinner time, and bedtime.  There is no excuse to allow a child to take an active screen to bed with them. Like us, they need their sleep.

Laptops and writing worked just as well as reading for me as an author.  Just saying.

Shameless plug for my work.

While many of you are downloading my books, I need many more to follow me here, and on Twitter.  I spent way too much time working on my novels and not enough time marketing them.  I just knew that once my first book was published, it would sell millions and I would be able to stop the day job.  HA!

The sales are enough to give me hope, but not near enough even to let me think about chucking the day job.  I have some great ideas that are waiting to come out on paper!  Share my work, follow me and tell your friends.   Thanks for the follows and of course the purchases!

Cover Art

Of all of the e-mails and comments that come back to me, Cover Art is a favorite topic.

The old adage, a picture is worth a thousand words is germane when it comes to cover art.

In The Saga of the Starduster, I wanted to draw the reader into the book without them turning the cover page.  You will no doubt notice that most cover art tries to capture your attention.

Three nude people headed into a seemingly innocuous body of water with a very interesting sky tells the reader several things.

  • There is nudity involved
  • This is probably not on Earth
  • It looks like a serene place
  • Their views on nudity are not what some might consider normal
  • It is probably a science fiction.

The title “The Saga of the Starduster” of course reaffirms the Science fiction aspect of the novel.

Some fun facts of this particular cover are that I made a trip to the Tetons with the express purpose of taking some pictures that I could use for artistic purposes.  Yes, I could find what I need on line, but that is someone else’s art or photography.  For my covers, it needs to be 100% TWScott.

After I found the photo I wanted from within the thousands of my pictures, it was then sucked into a program for digital editing where I changed the sky, drew the girls and of course made it look science fiction like.

When writing or creating art you want to sell the sizzle and not the steak.  I want to emotionally move you in some small way to want to know more about these nude people skinny dipping in some lake on some other planet.

One must take care regarding the cover art regarding what is on it.  If it is too busy, people will look at it and become exasperated quickly, and move on. Simplicity is key, much like magazine ads.  One should be able to look at the ad or cover and within a few seconds know what they might expect to find within the pages.

The Title is bold and easy to read.

Your brand, in this case, TWScott is easy to see and read.

A small blurb would help, and I am thinking about adding it.

“Skinny dipping on an alien planet was probably not their best idea.”

That blurb tells the reader that yes they are all nude, and swimming in a lake on an alien world and it also alludes that something unexpected is about to transpire.

Conversely, I see covers that are way too busy that confuse me.

I have said this on many different blogs, but it bears repeating.

“Know why you either like or don’t like something, and why.”

As an author, or possibly a cover art creator, or illustrator, this is terribly important.

The Saga of the Starduster

The saga of the Starduster was a fun novel to create.

TW loved creating stories as a child.  Having no idea that the bed time stories, created on the fly, would ever amount to anything.  Thinking back on my youth, I often wonder what it would be like to travel back in time knowing what you know now, but still in your child body.

The saga of the Starduster has a scene where our hero does just that through a fluke of alien technology and a lot of imagination from the author.

TW enjoyed crawling into the mind of Don as he is whisked off the international space station by an alien race who was shot at unbeknown to them by one of their foes.  Thinking that the hostility emanated from the blue planet not far from them the captain with a name we cannot pronounce investigates.

That antics TW takes the readers through while the Captain is trying to figure out who or what is on this blue planet are hilarious.  They use television broadcast to seek to determine what or who is on this planet and are they friendly.

TW references a scene from Sharknado among others.  The Captain and the crew of the alien vessel see the shows and take an entirely different perspective.

As Don learns that he has Cancer, the alien doctor tells him that she has created a virus to attack his cancer cells but must sequester him as the virus is meant for his cancer which is unique to him.

The story takes on many twists and turns as you travel back in time with Don, who ends up in his third-grade class as a child with the mind of a fifty-year-old man.

Love blossoms as his crush on his teacher now play out in a very strange way.

Romance with an alien doctor on a space station light years from the Earth is just one of the highlights of The Saga of the Starduster.

This novel is quickly becoming one to watch as the downloads are picking up worldwide. I have not marketed it much at all.  It is an inexpensive read with a surprise ending.

This novel is available on many e-book retailers including Amazon and Smashwords.

TW does not believe in sad endings, but your heart strings may be tugged at a little.   For you, science fictions nuts like myself, this novel is not lite on science fiction.

TW’s wry sense of humor and wit are all through most of the stories with the brand TWScott, but especially in this one, you will see several examples of it.

So if you were Don and ended up sitting in front of your third-grade teacher now, what would you do?  If you had a crush on your first or fifth, you pick her or him and then tell me, (us) what would you do?

I love the idea of it, so to me, it was a bonus for the novel.

Update!  Since the novel has been selling rather well I went back and took a look at it.  Finding a few typos I fixed them, added some text here and there and modified the cover art to include the phrase “Skinny Dipping on an alien world was probably not their best idea.”

If you want to get better at your craft practice practice practice!  This novel just got better.  It is updated on #amazon rev 3.1.  Give them a few hours to approve it and then go and get your updated copy!

Tipping Point

How do you get something for nothing?

Tipping Point

How do you get something for nothing?

As a person who understands physics, I can tell you that you don’t!

To obtain energy; fuel of some sort must be spent.

Targeting the moon with a laser for Nasa is an easy feat.  When you want to measure the distance from the earth to the moon you bounce a laser off a mirror placed on the moon, calculate the amount of time it takes to return and Viola!  You know the distance from the earth to the moon.

When Nasa could not hit the target, a red flag went off around the world.

Samantha, a genius in her own right, ask the question, “how do you get something for nothing?”

With tens of thousands of windmills extracting energy from the wind, she asked the question, could these be slowing down the earth causing the weather patterns to shift?”

Believe it or not, this is a romance!

Yes, it is an enjoyable Sci-Fi adventure of the likes you might see on the SCI-FI channel right after Sharknado, but it is that kind of story.  Many of my readers have mentioned that the SCI-FI channel should make a movie out of it.

If it ever happens maybe I will get to write the script!

I have been thinking about writing a screenplay to see if it improves my writing, has any of you done that?   With a screenplay, you have to think of every detail, which I think might improve one’s writing.

Someone told me that there is software designed for that purpose.

Anyway, Tipping Point is a fun lunchtime read on Kindle Unlimited, or you can support yours truly by actually spending a couple of bucks.  Think about it, for half a cup of coffee you can be entertained.

Tipping Point is a young adult kind of book with a tiny bit of implied naughtiness.  A tame version of my usual reads.
